THIS IS TENFOOTCITY!
HULL INDEPENDENT MAGAZINE
AND OPEN-ACCESS WEBSITE.
“Voices from the street and the sound of the Suburbs!”
Welcome to Tenfootcity. The alternative name for the city of Hull, East Yorkshire, England. Tenfootcity is also the name of our physical street magazine as well as this on-line sister magazine. It’s an independent magazine by the people, for the people and with the people of this City and the wider area, all in a language and style we can identify with. The reason this magazine was devised and launched is because we decided we wanted to reflect (independently of any mainstream media) what we consider, to be exciting times for Hull and East Yorkshire. This City is fast becoming more socially and culturally significant than it ever has been (as recently exmplified by the HULL FREEDOM FESTIVAL) and we, as a true street magazine, want to highlight and encourage that transformation.
We are Hull and we’re proud of it!

Starbucks in the centre of town might be an advertisment for capitalism and evil global oragnisations but I must say I do like a nice tall frappachino and if that means a bean picker in Brazil has to go without shoes then I’m afraid I can just about live with that tragedy on my conscience.
I would however trade my frothy iced coffee for a return to the good old days, the days of urine soaked wishing wells strewn with litter and blue rinse grandmas who had travelled five miles by bus for half a pound of thin beef and a savoury duck.
Fletchers butchers once traded proudly from the premises were starbucks now sanitizes and those who remember will undoubtedly agree that there are few meals in the history of gastronomy that can compare to the sheer bloody pleasure of a Fletchers Sausage and tomatoe sandwich.
Now I have no doubt that the meat content of those delicious snorkers was highly suspcious and I’m sure they were mainly composed of lips, hoofs and snouts but I didn’t care about all that stuff back then. It smelled like meat and it looked like meat so I ate it and in these days when everything has to be ethical and health concious I sometimes hark back to a more innocent time when you chewed something because it tasted nice. I mean it’s only in the 20th century that the working classes had a range of food to buy, before that it was kill whatever you can find and make use of every part and that world seems like ancient history today, something that cavemen did.
One of the most popular meals amongst the peasant classes in late nineteeth century america was Terrapinn Stew and just thinking about that turns my stomach but back then if you had a nice steamy plate of boiled alive terrapinns in front of you then you were eating and I’m sure the joy of that far outweighed the awkward shelling process and the gristly turtle head.
You wouldn’t find olives or pastrami at Fletchers what you got were the basics. Meat, pastries, buns and cheese and if you went in asking for some Chirzo the confused lady behind the counter would undoubtedly reach for the savoloys but compared to all the other butchers and bakeries this place was postively continetal, especally when you consider the alternative was Skeltons and they’ve been flogging the same bland tastless crap for years.
Some people might consider Bob Carvers to be the great Hull shop or perhaps the old Yankee Burger with the giant lips that traded were waterstones now stands but for me Fletchers will always be the daddy of them all and sometimes, when the stars are aligned and the wind is blowing in the right direction I can still smell the mouth watering aroma of cheap savoury ham and the finest bangers this side of heaven.
Mmm…I’m off for a wank.

Sabrinis Mexican Taverna & Restaurant (Princes Ave.)
This beautifully preserved Victorian shop has recently been revamped, with splashes of warm colour, into Princes Avenue’s first Mexican taverna and restaurant. Generous portions of nachos, chilli, enchiladas, burritos, chimmichanga, jambalaya and fajitas, all with vegetarian options, are served with dollops of salsa, sour cream and guacamole to make your taste buds tingle.
For those with a more delicate palate, the delicious, freshly prepared Mediterranean Tapas (inspired by Sabrini’s Syrian owner!) really hit the spot. Although fairly new, Sabrini’s is already building a strong reputation for its friendly ambience, excellent food, attention to individual diets (vegetarian, halal, vegan and food allergies) and an intimate atmosphere which is suitable for couples, families and parties alike. Also look out for their great idea; A monthly film screening in conjunction with Hull Film. A real treat seeing quality Film in a great location with good company!
You’ll love this place if you like your food eclectic, prepared with love and served in warm and intimate surroundings.
Great for a casual visit at any time as an intimate meal for a couple or for a group of friends. The place is also beautifully sized to hire out for a full party group. (You can have the place to yourselves for any occasion.) I don’t know the exact numbers, but I’d guess it seats between 20 and 30 people.
Sabrinis is delightful and the owners are lovely friendly people so visit as soon as you can! (Telephone 01482 449893)

A founder member of the increasingly popular Newland Avenue scene. Tucked alongside the railway which gives it it’s name, “Sleepers” could just as easily refer to the relaxed and unintimidating atmosphere.
If you want fantastic, freshly prepared food from a cosmopolitan menu, this is the place for you. Toasty paninis to juicy rib-eyes and a specials board that’s always worth a look at. Add to this a fine range of drinks from Peroni to Black Sheep and all stops inbetween.
Group bookings are a speciality here, so for that birthday bash, leaving-do or night out with the girls, Sleepers is the place to head for.
You’ll love it if:
You do chilled and urbane but not loud and louche.

Sun Café is a great little café-bar on the Cottingham road strip close to the University. With a relaxing décor and atmosphere they serve up some great sandwiches, hot paninis, ciabattas and cakes. Also offering a wide choice of hot and cold drinks including some rare specialities including bottled Arizona teas! (Perfect stimulation for the mind apparently!)
They’ve also got a nice secret garden, where you can disappear in peace for a couple of hours and maybe get some reading done whilst enjoying the food.
You can also work and research comfortably in here because they also provide you with an open-access-internet wireless hotspot.
Excellent and friendly Café-Bar this/ so check it out and get yourself acquainted.

Tropicana Café-Bar/Restauarant on Princes Avenue is an Indonesian Heaven! Probably the most original, authentic and exotic food on the strip but it’s also another great place to just hang out with a beer, because it’s also a bar with an outside terrace that often has an open-air barbeque cooking specialities right next to you!
Vince is a real-life authentic Malaysian guy who knows the food of his homeland inside out. Malayan (the correct term) is a beautiful and fragrant cuisine, with elements of Indonesian, Chinese and Thai but with a distinctive style and flavour all of it’s own. As well as being hot and spicy there’s also sweet flavours with a lot of Peanut-sauce elements, which gives a fantastic combination of taste elements, and there’s vegetarian options available on most of the dishes.
The Restaurant is nicely-designed with an open-plan kitchen, has a great atmosphere and also offers student discounts, so get yourself down there, get acquainted, and sample some of the most gorgeous food that you’re ever likely to taste in Hull.

If you think Da Gianni on Princes Avenue is good, then you’re gonna just love La Perla because the owner is actually the guy that taught everything to the chef at Da Gianni… who also happens to be his son! So, if you want to experience the classic authentic Italian dishes prepared by the real “master”… the Daddy of the pair, then you need to be heading to La Perla!
A softly-lit interior with the real feel of a quiet side-street Italian restaurant, the natural dark wood and brick décor gives a rustic ambience which creates a relaxed intimate dining atmosphere, yet at the same time the bigger tables lend themselves perfectly to groups or parties.
If you haven’t discovered La Perla yet, it’s an excellent choice to make, because you’ll be experiencing traditional Italian food, in a genuine Italian atmosphere, served by real (and very friendly) Italian people. A little pearl in our culinary crown.

Just like the best Italians themselves, this gorgeous and popular little restaurant is smart, well-dressed and totally tasty.
It’s the only truly authentic Italian restaurant on the Princes Avenue Strip serving up genuine Italian dishes in the original style. Great atmosphere and stylish interior with some great pieces of renaissance-inspired artwork featuring a risqué modern twist! (Check ‘em out for yourself.) Perfect place for lively dates and groups who want to enjoy themselves.
Great new is that they’ve also opened a take-away branch just a few doors away, which means that this is the first takeaway in Hull from which you can order real restaurant-quality dishes to eat at home. They also deliver it if you prefer and you can even get bottles of wine sent with it!
Brilliant idea to make their dishes (and superb pizzas) available through a takeaway outlet, but make sure you also decide to visit the restaurant occasionally to experience the real taste and atmosphere of Italy.
