WHAT IS TENFOOTCITY MAGAZINE?

What Tenfootcity magazine specifically aims to do, is to champion anything that is happening here, from the fields of Entertainment, Enterprise and Creativity……… so, really, that covers just about everything that’s going on! We aim to encourage a pride in our modern, diverse and multi-cultural city and in our identity as Hull people…… This magazine and website exists because “We are Hull.” A unique, inspiring, challenging and creative city that stands alone, like a light at the end of a home-coming tunnel, a long dark corridor that you need to travel to get yourself away from the rest of that strange and disturbing world out there, until you see the beautiful lights of the Humber Bridge on the Horizon and you know you’re back home once again into this enclave of true reality called Hull. A place that harbours our special lifestyle, distinctive accent and exclusive sense of humour. And it’s always a relief to be back amongst our own people. And only “we” understand that feeling!  The aim of this magazine is to reflect all of the above and to highlight and encourage all of the vibrancy that exists herein. In other words… you read this and you’re in tune with what’s really happening in this magical part of the world. Our editorial policy is one of social inclusion, non-discrimination, bloody revolution and having a laugh so get involved, get in touch and contribute anything you want, either for the magazine or for this site.

Love us. We Love you………

The way we achieve our aims, is to highlight everything that’s going on, but also to profile or feature significant people, issues and events that contribute to the unique character of our area. In particular, we’re interested in it’s creativity, self-expression and innovation. If you’ve got any sort of life going on, you won’t miss a single issue of the physical magazine, because it’s distributed all over the area, in all the right places, for you to pick up. Café-Bars, Shops, Clubs, Good Pubs, Restaurants, etc.. 240 Distribution points in total! Effectively everyone who has any interest in this City is reading, and using, this mag for information, inspiration, entertainment and publicity.

Creativity, expression and innovation can obviously include anything from writing, music, avant-garde sculpture and bizarre performance art, right through theatre, food, photography, illustration and design, to good haircuts and cool clothes! (And everything else in-between that you can think of!) So really we don’t want to ignore anything  that, in anyway, contributes to the vibrancy of our part of the world. We want to recognise, highlight and encourage it all, whatever genre it comes under. In fact, all of you reading this right now, are part of that overall expression of the City. Whatever job (or not) you do, just by your very presence, and your involvement in the life of the City, you contribute.

What We Need Is a Great Big Melting Pot . . . . (Blue Mink – circa 1970)

In general the people of this City are Modern (and old-fashioned in some ways!), Challenging (sometimes very difficult!), Creative (in lots of different ways!), Resourceful (sometimes have to be..), Cheeky (why not?), Honest (to an extent!) and Multi-Cultural (fuckin’ great.) I know there are also some people, out there, that are as thick as a Rhino’s foreskin, but in general, I think most of us are reasonably intelligent and open-minded. The ones that aren’t quite up to speed with modern thinking and good attitudes, just need a bit of encouragement and education, to drag them into the 21st century. Hopefully our magazine and website provides some of that for those people, as well as for those of us who are already there. (We hope we are.)

We LOVE the variety and diversity of people that are beginning to shape the character of our City. We want as many different nationalities, cultures, cuisines, religions (if that’s their bag!) musical tastes, sexual orientations, style-expressions, clubbing experiences and challenging opinions as possible. We want Hull to be recognised as a big spicy cauldron, because, Brothers & Sisters, that’s what makes the world go round…… and Hull has got to jump aboard and enjoy the ride. What we don’t want are the people that hate this progress, or indeed, hate other people just because they have a different lifestyle to their own. That’s the ignorance and bigotry we need to challenge. It’s the duty of all of us to stand up and speak out when you hear anyone expressing those extreme opinions based on prejudice. Even if they try to veil it in casual comment or “humour”, because it’s those attitudes that will hinder our development as a City if we allow them to prevail.

Alternative Media. Rebellion From The Street

What we love most about what we are doing with this magazine (and we know loads of you agree with this as well) is that we are independent and free-thinking media, in the hands of the people. We are answerable to no bastard! The established media in this country (and probably most others) is thinly-veiled hegemonic propaganda. It attempts to shape and control our views or to reinforce dodgy opinions we may have, which have already been instilled into us! The Media plays this role because, almost all of it is owned and controlled by that small percentage that own and control everything else! They don’t want us to start thinking too much, discussing and realising too much…… so they dumb us down with establishment shite like the Dull Daily Wail and it’s trite websites like “HullVile”  and nationally the media attempts to subconsciously encourage views and opinions amongst us that conveniently keep us divided, like inherent racism and sexism for example. (The old principle of Divide & Rule.)

Ok, yeah, so we’re just a humble little magazine (& unknown website – up to now!) in one provincial area, but listen, all over the world there’s thousands (millions!) of examples of these forms of media, especially now that we’ve all harnessed the power of t’internet. And as John Lennon once famously said, “You may say I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.” Well those sentiments still ring true.  So, we’re here to encourage that “thinking outside of the box” approach. That attitude of questioning, challenging, rebellion………… but at the same time to enjoy yourself, because there’s nowt worse than a boring rebel! Which all explains why we love our little piece of independent media.

The Oxygen of Street Publicity……

We’ve Arrived! Four years of representing the spirit of Hull means we are now well established in local folklore. We are now going to carry on with the job in hand, which is to reflect and encourage the vibrancy of this region at the same time as stirring things up a bit! You are all contributing right now, just be reading it and hopefully acting on some of the information contained herein. Welcome to the Tenfootcity Website and well done for wading through this Editorial Rant, I promise they’ll be shorter in future (but no less controversial) and I promise our sentiments and overall philosophy will not diminish in anyway.

Enjoy yourselves, it’s later than you think.
