Hull Music Scene: Making Dens

As the words; “Aria, one hand tied onto the riot, it is possible no doubt, to see who you work for now”, echo around the back streets of Amsterdam, Making Dens realise that they have come a long way over the past year. Unofficial brother and sister, Beki Bradley and Lee Atkinson, began their musical venture mid 2012 under the name of Dogs in Space with the guidance of local music champion, Stew Baxter (Warren Records). Their sound is an acoustic synthesis of luscious melody, harmony and memorable guitar hooks. Its origin is firmly rooted in classic indie but the melody and lyrical content is refreshingly novel with epic stories of tragically romantic characters, set in the world of the ordinary. Following an initial 2 track demo recorded by Stew Baxter, the band quickly set to work on raising their profile in 2013 with appearances on BBC Introducing, Galtres Festival and, later in the year, an international performance at the Zaal 100 Club in Amsterdam. Other highlights include being spotted at the Hull Freedom Festival and asked to play a set at the Majestic Hotel in Harrogate to 1000 guests at an international function.

Currently the band are in the studio recording their highly anticipated debut LP, which will be released at the end of the summer. After being introduced via a mutual friend, the band have chosen to work with respected local sound engineer and songwriter, John Cox. The more naïve beginnings of the duo’s songwriting have been replaced by a potent mix of creative energy, song craft and musicianship and there seems to be no shortage of new material; “Writing music together is something that comes really naturally and we are improving technically all the time. We will often find ourselves writing songs on buses, or in the queue at Aldi”, Lee laughs. “We also often text or email ideas to each other, wherever we are, at any time!” So 2014 will certainly be an exciting year for Making Dens. Aside from the release of their debut LP, they played their first festival date at the C-Fab festival in the Spring and gigs are being lined up across the summer, including a slot at the Galtres Parklands Festival. There are also plans to add a cellist and percussionist to complement their sound. Noted for their energy and delivery onstage, 2014 year could be a great year for Making Dens.
